How about $250,000-$500,000 in good condition. Now, if you happen to stubble onto one of these in near-mint condition the value of this card would shoot up to an estimated 3-5 million dollars! That card is a near-mint condition 1909-11 T206 Honus Wagner Rookie card also known as the “Gretzky Wagner” after Wayne Gretzky bought it in 1991 for $451,000.

The World’s Oldest Civilization

The cradle of civilization is one of the five possible locations where civilization first emerged. According to many experts, civilization began in what is called the Fertile Crescent (Mesopotamia), and then spread to other areas due to a nomadic lifestyle. But this traditionally held view is disputed by several scholars and archaeologists. They the viewpoint that there is no single cradle of civilization, but independent development of civilization occurred in several areas, which were Mesopotamia, Egypt, Indus Valley, Shang (Yellow River Valley), and Mesoamerica and Andean South America. The reason for this belief in multiple cradles of civilization has resulted from observation, and study of relics of the period. These relics point out how different features developed irregularly and independently in these different civilizations. The interaction between different communities due to nomadic lifestyles led to the development of common systems and techniques in agriculture, pottery, metal work, etc. It is therefore difficult to specifically state which is the oldest civilization, as there is no definite answer to the question.

Mesopotamia
Many experts, as mentioned above, believe that Mesopotamia being located in the Fertile Crescent, is the most ancient civilization in the world. The reason for this is that Mesopotamia is where the Tigris and the Euphrates rivers converge, making the area extremely suitable for agriculture. Many agrarian societies are therefore believed to have been established here. Also since the Ubaid, Sumerian, Akkad, Babylon, and Assyrian civilizations are all located in this area, Mesopotamia is widely considered to be the oldest civilization. Settlements can be traced in Mesopotamia to the start of the Early Bronze age, which is much before 7000 BC. The earliest sites were in Jarmo, and the earliest cities were established in Sumer under the Uruk period. Mesopotamia, over the years, has been ruled by the Hellenists, Persians, Mongols, and Turks. Mesopotamia is the area that we now identify as Iraq.

Egypt
One of the oldest civilizations in the world, there is archaeological and anthropological evidence that points towards the existence of a settlement in the area as early as 10000 BC, but there is no definite evidence to determine the time period. The settlement then took to farming as their main source of sustenance, but remains of another settlement found in the area, that can be dated back to the same period, shows practice of hunting and fishing. It is indicated by studies that the land around Sahara was not as arid as it is today and was perfect for grazing ground. It was around 2500 BC that the settlements moved towards the Nile due to change in climate and inhospitable conditions, where the civilization was established as a more complex society. The civilization of Ancient Egypt has been responsible for several lasting legacies for humankind as a whole, including pyramids, mathematical systems, practice of medicine, glass making techniques, and also paper, in its earliest form.

Ancient India
Settlements have known to exist in the area since before 6000 BC, as there is evidence that has been found that dates back to this period. Studying the history of the Indus valley civilization tells us that this was a well-developed society. These settlements were very self sufficient with remains of granaries, burial tombs, drills for stones and copper, etc., found in the area near present day Balochistan in Pakistan. The Indus Valley Civilization, which saw complex societal structures, have known to exist since 4000 BC, with the major cities being Harappa and Mohenjo-daro. Both these cities have been discovered to be large cities with many structures of great magnitude inside city limits. The decimal fraction system is one of the gifts of the Indus Valley Civilization to the modern-day world. Excavation of the sites that are believed to be a part of the civilization have been on since 1920 and the most recent discovery was in 1999.

China
China is heralded as the world’s oldest continuous civilization. Pre-civilized settlement relics dating back to 7000 BC have been found in China. In fact, in some cases, the date variance ranges between 9000 BC and 5500 BC. There is evidence of agricultural practice, pottery, craft work, and even animal husbandry. The civilization can be traced back to the establishment of city states in the Yellow River Valley around 2200 BC. But this claim is disputed with the first dynasty that is archaeologically definable being traced to the Shang Dynasty of Ancient China which started its reign somewhere around 1750 BC. There is very little verifiable data about earlier settlements in the area due to the lack of written records or any such documents.

Andean South America and Mesoamerica
In the Americas, the oldest civilizations were located in South America and Mesoamerica. The oldest Mesoamerican civilization was the Olmec Civilization which was established sometime around 1200 BC. Settlements have been traced back to 5100 BC, due to records of corn cultivation from then. Some of the main cities that were established under the Olmec rule were San Lorenzo and La Venta, which like other cities, are said to have had giant statues of the then Emperor. In South America, the oldest civilization was the Norte Chico that was a group of connected settlements, with huge cities at Aspero and Caral.

If you want to know the record holder for the oldest person in the world, then you’re in the right place. Jeanne Louise Calment (born in 1875 / died 1997) was the oldest living person and had the longest confirmed human life span in history, living to the age of 122 years, 164 days. She lived in Arles, France, for her entire life, and outlived both her daughter and grandson. She became especially well known from the age of 113, when the centenary of Vincent van Gogh’s visit brought reporters to Arles. She entered the Guinness Book of Records in 1988, and on 17 October 1995 she became the oldest person ever.

She said she was 12 or 13 when she saw Vincent Van Gogh in Arles, and she said later that he was “very ugly, ungracious, impolite, sick, I forgive him, they called him loco.”. Madame Calment once said: “I have an enormous will to live and a good appetite, especially for sweets”. She used to eat more than two pounds of chocolate a week and treat her skin with olive oil, rode a bicycle until she was 100.

The oldest undisputed lifespan for a man supercentenarian is that of Christian Mortensen, who lived to be 115 years, 252 days. He was the oldest undisputed man ever. He was also the first undisputed man to reach 114 and 115 years of age.

The longest documented lifespan for a living person is that of 114-year-old Besse Cooper, of Georgia, United States, who was born on 26 August 1896. She succeeded Eunice Sanborn of Texas, United States, on 31 January 2011.

Tuti Yusupova (claimed birth date July 1, 1880) is an Uzbekistani who claims, at an alleged age of 130, to be the oldest living person in the world. It has been claimed that she has a birth certificate recording her as having been born in 1880, but this has not been independently verified.

Antisa Khvichava (born 8 July 1880) is a Georgian woman who is 130 years old, which would make her the oldest person of all time. Her passport is given as evidence. However it is claimed that it is likely that her birth records were either misrecorded or falsified.

Did you know that a supercentenarian is someone who has reached the age of 110 years. This age is achieved by about one in a thousand centenarians. There are estimated to be 300–450 living supercentenarians in the world, though only about 90 individual verified living supercentenarians are known. A supercentenarian is considered ‘verified’ if his or her claim has been validated by an international body that specifically deals in longevity research, such as the Gerontology Research Group or Guinness World Records.

A Blue whale is sometime found assembles with other blue whales and alone. Their habitat is in the entire oceans of the world as long they can find crustaceans or krill. In summer, the blue whale spends most of their time in arctic waters and they move to Equator when winter is coming to breed the new whale.

Blue Whale vs other whale

A blue whale is topped as the biggest animal or creature in the planet because when adult, the species can weight 150 tons and stretches 30 meters or 100 feet long. The largest blue whale had ever been found was reported in 1922. It was a female blue whale with length more than 33.58 meters or 110.14 feet.

This giant aquatic creature is marked with its small dorsal fin located close to their tail, 25-30 meters long grooves from the throat to the chest, dark baleen or whalebone, and series of fringed plates on the upper side jaw that is used to shift plankton and the salt water. Last, Giant whale has no predator but human. The number lowers every decade and now it is classified as an endanger species by the Red Data Book. The best thing to keep them alive is letting them alone. It is the wisest way to keep them as the largest whale in modern time.

1. VY Canis Majoris

The undisputed king of the hill here is no doubt the most easily recognized star, VY Canis Majoris. This topper of the top 10 largest stars list is much less in density but has a whooping solar radii of 1800-2100. If set in place of our Sun, it would easily engulf all the space up till Saturn. Roughly 5000 light years away from us, VY Canis Majoris is also known as one of the brightest stars in our discovered universe. Many scientists are engaged in speculation over the type of death VY Canis Majoris is bound to have. Many state that will go off as a hyper nova and part of it will be converted into a black hole. The dissemination of VY Canis Majoris may light up the entire galaxy for up to 12 weeks!

2. VV Cephei A

Ranking second in our list is VV Cephei A from the 2,400 light years far Cepheus constellation and is second only to VY Canis Majoris. The VV Cephei is a double star system consisting of a red and blue supergiant. VV Cephei A (or VV Cephei α) is the red supergiant having solar radii of 1,600-1,900 and a luminosity factor equaling to 315,000 Suns. Matter is exchanged between the red star and the blue one. This is the likely cause of fluctuations in the stars brightness. The constant mass transfer continually changes dimensions of both the stars. Like the Betelgeuse, an accurate estimation is not possible for this star owing to its non-spherical shape and extended atmosphere. A more accurate inspection found out that the star was shaped more like a tear drop than a sphere. The VV Cephei A is supposed to go supernova soon and send its blue brother on a solo journey!

3. V838 Monocerotis

This star could have easily been ranked second on our list if it hadn’t been for its baffling 20,000 light years distance from the Sun, making it hard to measure. However, almost all the astronomers agree on the 1570±400 solar radii range. It is named V838 Monocerotis or V838 Mon because it was the 838th variable star observed in the constellation of Monoceros. It was discovered during one of its three major blow ups starting in 2002. The star became as bright as one million Suns! Sudden expansion of layers and rapid cooling of gases during the explosion created one of the most breath-taking light echo ever witnessed by man. One theory about the explosions is that a planet almost three times the size of Jupiter was consumed by V838 Monocerotis releasing such a huge amount of energy. This theory is still a hot debate but it fits corresponds nicely to all statistics and figures.

4. Mu Cephei

A hypergiant, known as Mu Cephei (µ Cephei) or Herschel’s Garnet Star, comes in at number 4 on our countdown list. It lies in the Cepheus constellation which is associated with the Garnet Star Nebula. Apart from being one of the brightest stars of our galaxy, it is also of the biggest; almost 1650 solar radii! Being 38,000 times brighter than the Sun, it is easily visible to the naked eye on the northern hemisphere on earth. Being garnet red in appearance has made it one of the most recognizable stars in our Milky Way. It is a confirmed variable with variations in brightness over a period of time. A comparative analysis of size would show that if earth was the size of a golf ball, then the diameter of Mu Cephei would be more than the length of two back to back Golden Gate Bridges!

5. WOH G64

At a distance of around 160,000 light years away, WHO G64 takes the 5th spot on the top 10 largest stars in the universe. Located in a nearby galaxy known as Large Magellanic Cloud, this hypergiant resides in the Dorado constellation. Its radius is 1540 times the radius of our Sun. Although this particular star has lost as much as half of its original weight due to ejection of material from its surface, it has formed a light year long thick ring torus of mass and dust around itself. These changes in mass had led astronomers to overestimate its density and were perplexed at its sustenance at such a low temperature. This was then fixed by accounting for all the mass present in its ring. This means that WHO G64 is unstable and already has lost as much as tenth of its mass. It is expected to go supernova in a couple of thousand years.

6. V354 Cephei

V354 Cephei (marked V0345 on various charts) marks the beginning of a class called hyper giants. Slightly smaller than the WHO G64, it stands at the 6th position, having solar radii of 1520. It is located in the Cepheus constellation, which is supposed to represent a mythical king. It stands at 9,000 light years from our earth. It is so huge that it could easily cover the orbit path of Saturn if place where is the sun is! The red color of V354 Cephei indicates its temperature range to be around 3000 to 4000 K. Hotter stars tend to appear yellow and those which are extremely hot get a bluish tinge in their appearance.

7. KY Cygni

The KY Cygni the center of debate due to its size. Some claim that this star is the largest one in the universe being 2850 solar radii. This claim has not been proven false. However, it is at least 1420 and placed 7th on the list till this uncertainty is cleared. KW Cygni is 5000 light years away from earth in a constellation know as Cygnus. Along with being one of the largest, it also is of the brightest stars as it is 300,000 times brighter than the Sun. This red super giant is about 25 times the mass of the Sun, or almost 50 nonillion kilograms!

8. KW Sagitarii

1460 times the radius of our Sun, KW Sagitarii holds the 8th position in this list. This particular supergiant is also one of the brightest stars around with luminosity levels as much as 360,000 Suns! Being 10,000 light years away does make it less bright to the naked eye, but its size can be judged by the fact that it would cover almost half the area between Saturn and Jupiter! KW Sagitarii is located in the Sagittarius constellation of the Milky Way.

9. RW Cephei

Located in the Cepheus constellation of our Milky Way, RW Cephei is an orange supergiant and a very hot star with temperatures up to 4400K! These high temperatures can cause it to expand and hence create an uncertainty about its accurate size. However, scientists agree on solar radii of around 1260 to 1650 placing this star on 9th position in the largest stars in the universe list. Although a midget as compared to many of its neighbors, RW Cephei is almost as large as the orbit of the planet Jupiter. Temperatures keep varying and this is reflected by its pulsations in brightest and colors.

10. Betelgeuse (Alpha Orionis)

At a distance of 640 light years from our planet; this supergiant is the closest one on the Top 10 largest stars of the universe list. Betelgeuse is also known as Alpha Orionis. This is due to the fact that this red colored star resides in the famous Orion constellation. This star has solar radii of 1,180.It is interesting to note that this star also appears on the list of top ten brightest stars at number 9. Betelgeuse is a dying star and will soon explode into supernova giving earth a second sun for around 2 weeks or more. No harm will come to us due to our distance, but the immense energy released will be visible as light in the most awesome fireworks show man has ever seen. This is expected to happen in the near future.

Of all the world records profiled on Extreme Science this one has proved to be the most elusive and tricky to keep updated. It seems there are a number of different organisms that hold the record for the “longest lived” and their exact ages are still under investigation. In fact, the only thing we can report for certain is that the records listed here will probably be upstaged by a new discovery in the near future. Below is a listing of what is currently in the literature as some of the oldest organisms still living today:

October, 1999; 250-million-year-old bacteria were found in ancient sea salt beneath Carlsbad, New Mexico. The microscopic organisms were revived in a laboratory after being in ‘suspended animation’, encased in a hard-shelled spore, for an estimated 250 million years. The species has not been identified, but is referred to as strain 2-9-3, or B. permians.

May, 1995; 40-million-year-old bacteria (Bacillus sphaericus) were found in the stomach of a bee encased in amber. These bacteria were also found in a state of suspended animation and were re-animated in a laboratory.

1997; King’s Holly (Lomatia tasmanica) – found in the rainforests of Tasmania. Scientists estimated the age of the plant using a nearby fossil of an identical plant. It was found to be over 43,000 years old! The plants appear to be sterile – incapable of producing flowers and viable seeds. Lomatia is triploid, that is, it has three sets of chromosomes instead of two. Because of this it is unable to sexually reproduce. The clonal thickets reproduce vegetatively by root suckering. Fossil leaves found in a late Pleistocene deposit may be genetically identical to present-day plants. The plant is a rare freak of nature whose origins and age are as yet unknown.

August, 1999; Box Huckleberry (Gaylussacia brachycera) – researchers in Pennsylvania have discovered a living plant that is a remnant of the last Ice Age. Using the known rate of growth if this self-sterile plant, they estimated that this 1/4-acre colony is over 13,000 years old. Researchers are still trying to verify the growth rate to determine is that age is an accurate measure.

March, 2004; Eucalyptus recurva. Also known as “Mongarlowe Mallee” or “Ice Age Gum” it is the rarest Eucalypt in Australia or the world, and is known from only 5 individual specimens. Scientists in Australia are undertaking analyses to determine the exact age of one specimen that is estimated to be 13,000 years old. This aging method also relies on determining the plant’s growth rate. Scientists are stilly verifying the growth and performing genetic analyses of neighboring specimens to determine if they are from the same organism.

April, 1980; Creosote bush (Larrea tridentata). Scientists discovered a giant, and very ancient clone of the creosote bush in the Mojave Desert in California they estimated to be between 11,000 and 12,000 years old.

In the photo above are specimens of the 250-million year old bacteria, B. permians. If it can be verified that these were re-animated from a long, long period of suspended animation then they hold the record for world’s oldest living organism.

The huge dinosaurs called sauropods astound us. So massive! So tall! Such long necks and tiny heads! But more astounding is this: these strange giants rank among Earth’s great success stories, roaming the planet for 140 million years. Today, scientists from many fields have joined in an effort to figure out how they did it. Paleontologists, biologists, botanists, animal nutritionists, and engineers all agree: the world’s largest dinosaurs were extraordinary creatures. The challenge is to discover what made them tick.

World’s longest tunnel

A giant drilling machine completed the world’s longest tunnel beneath the Swiss Alps in October 2010, paving the way for continuous high-speed rail travel between northern and south-eastern Europe. Photo: Reuters

Norway is the longest country in Europe — nearly every Norwegian I meet proudly boasts that if Norway were a long wooden board and Oslo the nail it hinged on, you could swing the country around and it would reach all the way to Sicily in southern Italy.

But that’s not nearly the half of it. Norway’s length comes nowhere close to the country’s complexity — especially the way that fjords, glaciers, and very steep mountains create a kind of beautiful topographical maze that travelers must carefully navigate in order to get from A to B.

In other words, Norway is not Kansas —you can’t just drive across it. Some days, roads are closed by four-story-high snowdrifts, and on most days, there’s a mountain in the way or a fjord to cross or go around. If you were to unravel Norway’s bundled-up coastline, it would reach more than 25,000 km (15,625 miles) in length.

For a very long time, the reality of Norway’s intricate geography meant a life of isolation for so many Norwegians — during the long winter months, farmers and fisherman were cut off from the world by snow and ice. Neighbors may live less than a mile from one another, but on opposite sides of the fjord or mountain, that’s a world apart. In some ways, before Norway’s extensive network of roads, bridges, and tunnels was completed, the west coast of Norway (namely Bergen) had closer ties with the outside world than their own capital, Oslo.

This “isolation nation” is one major reason why Norway has so many distinct dialects. People living in different valleys and fjords were sequestered long enough to develop their own way of speaking. It also contributed to Norway’s tunnel-digging craze.

Nobody builds tunnels the way the Norwegians do. If there’s a rock they can dig through, they will, and it makes driving through the country much more exciting than simply rounding a bend. Once while driving through the western fjords of Norway, I counted myself driving through 39 tunnels in the space of 90 minutes. Seriously.

The longest of these engineering phenomena is the Lærdal Tunnel (Lærdalstunnelen), spanning the mountain between the tiny villages of Lærdal and Aurland but fundamentally linking Bergen and Oslo.

At 24.5 km (15.23 miles) long, the Lærdal Tunnel is the longest road tunnel in the world, meaning it’s the longest tunnel that you can drive through. At 57 km (35.4 miles), the Gotthard Base Tunnel in Switzerland now holds the title for longest tunnel in the world (used only by trains), and last September, I rode through the Seikan Tunnel in Japan, which is the longest undersea tunnel in the world.

It took me over twenty minutes to drive from one end of the Lærdal Tunnel to the other, and traveling through it evoked a strange emotion to know that I was zipping beneath one of Norway’s massive stone mountains.

Speeding through the dark for such a long time might be unnerving for some travelers, but rest assured, the Lærdal Tunnel is one of the safest in the world, with a high-tech ventilation system, safety stations with emergency equipment and call boxes, and several man-made caves that are lit with colored lights. There are even regular parking bays inside the tunnel where you can pull over should you need to.

I shot this video from the hood of my car in order to show you the full length of the tunnel, but for the sake of your time, I’ve sped it up by 800%.

That way you can experience the longest tunnel in the world in the longest country in Europe in the shortest amount of time.
